Quarantine Times
03:09
|
|||
The cruise we booked in May won’t set sail til better tides,
Seems everything goes viral but my band.
Until these folks get better, I guess we’re all just stuck inside.
How did we plan to celebrate in quarantine times.
I must admit that lock down sounds romantic in my mind,
Throw away the keys and pour the wine.
But if we get much closer, then we’d have to sanitize.
Why’d we go and fall in love in quarantine times?
There’s nothing that I’d rather do
Than be locked away with you,
Picnicking on rations here inside.
You know if we can make it through
These 14 days of solitude
Forever and eternity gonna be just fine.
We’ve heard about the plagues and the locusts in the skies,
From China, Italy, and Palestine.
If I were a religious soul, I’d say the end is nigh—
How do we keep believing in these quarantine times.
There’s nothing that I’d rather do
Then be locked away with you,
Reading poetry by candlelight.
You know if we can make it through
These 14 days with gratitude
Forever and eternity will be just fine.
Romeo and Juliet would not have had to die
If the message that was sent would have arrived.
But the messenger was held up deep within the quarantine—
Why’d they go and fall in love?
There’s nothing that I’d rather do
Than be locked away with you,
Scraping our last bowls of beans and rice.
I’ll tell you what we’re gonna do—
Gonna bunker down and make it through,
Cause Forever and eternity has been just fine.
Forever with you and me will be just fine.

These Three Pines
02:29
|
|||
I can't sit here wondering where you came from
You can't wonder how I've been
From root to rise, as clear as Oklahoma skies
I know everyone's a good dog under these three pines
I don't know what happens when we move on
I can hardly make up reasons why we're here
I don't need to seek out signs or the hallowed by and by
To know everyone's a good dog under these three pines
Chasing a dream or chasing a rabbit
I don't care what it is
I'm just happy to have it.
I've been chasing mountains from the Prairie.
I've been humming songs that I don't know.
When I catch the quiet of the noise you left behind,
I know everyone's a good dog under these three pines.
Everybody's a good dog.
Everybody's a good, good dog.

When It's Over
03:02
|
|||
When all this is over, I'm gonna buy you a drink,
Gonna laugh til the stars in our eyes turn blue.
And our knees are gonna touch accidentally--
Wipe the rings from the bar while I roll my eyes at you.
When all this is over.
When all this is over, gonna take a long walk.
Just you and me on some Philly streets.
We won't mind that the line that we're in is too long--
And I'll nudge you in the side to try and get our eyes to meet.
When all this is over.
I'll worry less about the rent,
I won't remind you what you said the last time--
Before it was over.
And we'll spend more time with friends,
And I'll be more grateful than I was
Some of the time.
When it's over.
When all this is over, gonna move between the lines,
Be a dot on the map that is never still.
Gonna hop all the fences and get lost in all the crowds,
Gonna make this a promise, and with perspective lose my vow.
When all this is over.
I'll worry less about the rent,
I won't remind you what you said the last time--
Before it was over.
And we'll spend more time with friends,
And I'll be more grateful than I was
Most of the time.
At least from time to time.
When it's over.

Hard Times (You & Me)
03:09
|
|||
I'm never good at telling lies,
I'm as certain of what's next
As I am the color of your eyes.
And in the morning with goodbye's,
I can't promise I'll stay safe,
But I can say that I will try.
No one's asking for a brave face,
A stiff upper lip, and don't-you-cry's.
Cause these are hard times
On top of hard times.
Nobody's scared when everything is all right.
When I'm coming down on the bottom line--
It's just you and me,
And, kid, I'm gonna try.
Didn't I see you all alone?
In the middle of a stage
After your friends had all gone home.
You didn't shake a single note,
Oh, but even if you did,
You're never one to let it show.
No one's asking for a brave face,
And you're not standing on your own.
Cause these are hard times
On top of hard times.
Don't go faking brave when everything ain't all right.
When you're coming down to the bottom line--
It's still you and me.
Oh, kid, you gotta try.
You gotta try.
The air is thinning all around.
But, kid, you know the drill--
Just don't look down.
Cause these are hard times
On top of hard times.
Life ain't a game, but we're playing it all right.
When we're coming round on the bottom line--
It's just you and me.
Kid, we gotta try.

You.
02:51
|
|||
If you're scared, I am scared, too,
But it wasn't you brave face that drew me to you.
So if you're going, I'm coming, too--
No, it's not for Fate's numbers or stars lining true;
It's you.
If you're home, I am home, too,
There's not a house that I've lived in that was home before you.
So if you're moving, I'm leaving, too--
It's a pile of bricks to a heart that is true
For you.
I've known you my whole life and never before--
Like the smell of leaves of the ground.
Wild in sight and quiet in sound,
Make me move with the wind and change with the light.
Your heart was broken in two
And the sound of its breaking shook dust from the moon.
My heart followed the tune.
My favorite part is where it was bruised.
I think we did good.
I think we did pretty good.

Waitin' on Rain
02:23
|
|||
I remember when these fields were green--
Teeming full, like I dream.
All I'd imagined I had in my hands,
Feed the heart, feed a friend from the land.
Now I'm
Waitin' on rain, Waitin' on rain.
Waitin' on rain, waitin' on rain.
The Lord told Noah go and build and ark
Out there are burning sand.
Lips must've been dry, throat must've been parched,
Must've been pretty hard to give a damn, while he's
Waitin' on rain, waitin' on rain.
Waitin' on rain, Waitin' on rain.
Crystal river and hills of green,
Crops unwither-- tall as trees.
Again I gotta believe I'm gonna see---
Waitin' on rain, Waitin' on rain.
Waitin' on rain, Waitin' on rain.
Waitin' on rain, Waitin' on rain.
Waitin' on rain, Waitin' on rain.

Oh, Brother
02:44
|
|||
Who said don't move an inch
Who said don't rock the boat
I got a good plan for a short fuse on a long day
And if we get it right
More likely if we don't
I'd rather sink and swim than hurry up and wait
Oh, my, me, oh brother we're up to our muddy knees again
I got a hatching plan
You got a faint idea
We got a box and a backyard bigger than the ocean gonna set sail
We'll double back again
When the sun gets pale
Let's startle out the stars with a howl and a long tail
Oh, my, me, oh brother we're up to our muddy knees again
Who's gonna sit this one out? (Not me, not me!)
Who's gonna stay and forget about it? (Not me, not!)
When I've got a friend and a dog and a big ol' world to look around...
We gotta run!
Oh, we gotta run.
Let's pack the dirt back down
On our coyote run
Cuz we got five more minutes 'till the lights turn out.
Oh, my, me, oh brother we're up to
Oh, my, me, oh brother we're up to
Oh, my, me, oh brother we're up to our muddy knees again

All Along
02:52
|
|||
All Along
written by The Rough & Tumble
Is there really any difference between a teardrop and a prism
and a dragonfly's wings that you caught for an instant
They're all cool and iridescent
Tricks of light and time
Turns the story incandescent for a little while
I can't see you going
While I'm lost at home?
Ooooo
When I snap a picture it's just a gasp of a glimmer
The impression of an image I can hardly stand to shutter
The refraction of the morning light
Moving up my spine
I caught you there around the center
How can I see you going
While I'm seeing you at home?
Oooooo
Have you been here all along?
Someone said that happy tears are the other side of grief
but I was so brokenhearted that I wouldn't have believed it
If I didn't see that prism turning
right in front of me
I can let you go on
And keep you here with me
Oooooo
Have you been here all along?
Have you been here all along?

War of the Wild
04:08
|
|||
Mother's sick but not yet dying,
She got the war of the wild in her blood.
Burnt this town out for all her trying,
The intersection of her heart.
Maybe if I dress my best,
And ask forgiveness for the rest.
Mother's sick but not yet dying,
It don't look good, but it's a start.
I was fed on honeysuckle,
Prairie grasses for my bed.
I wasn't full, I wasn't starving.
She taught me work, she taught me rest.
Didn't my muscles glint with sun?
Believed I was the only one.
I said goodbye to Mother then--
Now I got nowhere to lay my head.
Can I take it back?
Can I turn back home?
When I've stolen all I covet,
Dug my heels to rise above.
When I've upended all I own,
Can I make it right where I belong?
I took the berries from the brambles,
Shook the almonds from the trees.
If they aren't ready, I'm still able--
Mother said, but can't stop me.
I tell coyote how and when
He can howl at my command.
I took the berries from the brambles
And the flowers from the honeybees.
Can I take it back?
Can I turn back home?
When I've stolen all I covet,
Dug my heels to rise above.
When I've upended all I own,
Can I make it right where I belong?
Mother's sick but not yet dying,
She sent the War of the Wild to my blood.
I hit the dirt for all my crying
And gave her back her blessed mud.
Can I make it right where I belong?
Can I make it right where I belong?

Label the Liar

Label the Liar
written by The Rough & Tumble
Copyright 2020 Penny Jar Publishing
Label the liar.
I got water in one hand,
In the other a lighter.
Label the liar.
Who said the thread
Didn’t start with a fire?
Patron Saint or Patient Zero,
I can’t decide if you’re villain or hero.
Who got your eyes, who got your smile
When all I got was your long night?
Label the liar.
I got seconds in one hand,
In the other an hour.
Label the liar.
I got silence on one side,
But the other side’s louder.
Maybe I can’t resist a comeback story.
Or maybe I stopped resisting someone coming back for me.
I don’t want wild, it don’t make me free—
One of us is leaving, it won’t be me.
Label the liar.
I got water in one hand
And a brain on fire.
Label the liar.
Isn’t it time
We both got tired.
Who said that 28 was the going rate these days?
(I don’t wanna die, anymore).
Label the liar.

If I Can Imagine
02:48
|
|||
If I can imagine sprinklers as rain,
The big waft of oxygen it smells just the same.
Then I can imagine anywhere I’ve been.
I can start from the start or work back again.
I can be dream and you can be tame.
We can breathe out the wrong words for all our right names.
If I can imagine how young I will be.
They don’t make big silver screens for small time dreams.
I’m moving forward as fast as I am.
Once I step out, I can’t step back again.
I can be big time and you can be brave.
We can breathe out the wrong words for all our right names.
I think that we are right on track.
Right on time.
You know that I will have your back.
And you’ll have mine.
If I can imagine all night for a day,
And now for forever an even trade,
If all the world’s out there just out of frame,
Then I can imagine that this part stays the same.
We can be dreamy or we can be tame.
And we’ll yell out the wrong words for all our right names.

I Made You Laugh
02:39
|
|||
If I'd only thought of it,
If I didn't talk too soon.
If my foot had met my tongue on it.
If I'd only read the room.
My eyes are on the ceiling now,
And on the floorboards, too.
Seems I can see 'bout everything--
Except that I can't look at you.
Then your smile stretched wide as a sunlit sky
And your teeth shown bright as the snow is white
And you threw your head back,
And I know why--
I made you laugh.
I made you laugh.
Like a bird in song,
There was nothing wrong,
And I wish that sound could last.
I made you laugh.
If I'd only thought of it,
If I didn't talk too soon,
I'd have missed on everything--
Oh, I'd have missed you.

Go-To Friend
02:35
|
|||
You like cosmos, wine and shots
Home decorating and garden plots
If life tests you with a roarshack
You see a funny little party in every ink blot
You're my go-to friend yodel-ay-ee-oo
You're my go-to friend yodel-ay-ee-oo
And whatever trouble you're getting in
You're my go-to friend yodel-ay-ee-oo
Glad you didn't call 911
That night you wished you lost your phone
You lost your mind but wasn't it fun
To sing happy birthday to everyone
I know you know or have a hunch
I'm your to-go friend in all the bunch
If you're down or in a crunch
Let's call the whole thing off and let's do lunch

The Front Porch

|

The Front Porch
They took off the barn door
No hinge left not torn
When they're done here you wouldn't know the place anymore
They're shaving the hillside
You can see out for miles
I don't have the heart to bring her on by
Cause all she's working at is crying
I guess you can only take so much goodbye-ing
Just leave us the front porch
For a few long days more
We're not putting up a fight-what for?
Leave us the front porch
Leave us for poor
We can't lay down what that warehouse money paid for
Can't you leave us the front porch?
They took off the front porch
Guess we've been sold
To mind your business and do as we're told
Can't you leave us the front porch.

You Were That Friend
02:12
|
|||
You Were That Friend
I've got a friend who everybody wants
Who everybody wants to be
When I was down you picked me up
Yeah, you were that friend to me
Sometimes it's like living in a house of cards
On a day when the wind blows so strong
I get scattered I get turned upside down
But you get me right back up and right where I belong
When the night comes pushing down on me
You're like a party on the 4th of July
You always told me "don't look up, don't look up
If you wanna miss that fire in the sky"

Paint You A Picture
Copyright Penny Jar Publishing 2022
I'm gonna make you a picture of me
Mark on velvet canvas and on wooden slate
Rainbow colors out the box, let me demonstrate
That'll get you a picture of me
I'm gonna put on my most colorful socks
Think about my buddy take that memory for a walk
If you see me running join me in the next block
I'll be the one in the most colorful socks
Here I will begin again, I am an Olympian,
there is no problem that you'll face that can't be solved by my embrace, pleased to make your acquaintance
I'm gonna sing you a song about me
Bottle up a melody, feel the booming bass
Get your toes a tapping put a smile on your face
And you'll know it's a song
I'll paint you a song
That'll get you a picture of me

Oh, Mariposa
03:01
|

Oh, Mariposa
Copyright Penny Jar Publishing 2022
It’s a long way to the milkweed
Slow and sailing through the months
Figure eights generate in summer’s grace
Where the lighthouse waits for us
From the Oyamel fir forests
To the dune grass by the light
Gulls cry over western shore
With the sundial of tiny kites
Oh Mariposa, a love who breathes to sing
Oh Mariposa, 3,000 miles, two hearts, one wing
It’s a long way to the milkweed
Analemma for a dance
Guitar strings and accordion keys
For the nectar, for the chance
